While the original strays a little too close to Florence & The Machine territory for my tastes, Manchester-based producer xxxy completely re-imagines the new Austra single, turning it into a bouncy tech-house party-starter that would make Julio Bashmore green with envy.
London-based producer xxxy has made it clear he will be releasing a new EP on Well Rounded very soon. We’re promised club-friendly, forward-thinking bass music with the kind of no thrills production we’ve come to adore.
Having both recently performed at the Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid, Finnish vocalist Sara Sayed and UK tunesmith xxxy decided to collaborate on a new track called ‘The Earth Got Round’. It seems unlikely they met anywhere else so let’s just imagine that’s where this collaboration was conceived.
Ghostpoet‘s been kicking a gargantuan storm this year, his debut album is a hell of a record and the debut single ‘Survive It’ threatened to render all other music pointless. Well, now he’s back with another track from the album, ‘Liiines’; a haunting ballad that avoids mawkish metaphors and clichés.
It’s a track that’s packed with heart-wrenching narratives and ingenious wordplay. It was only a matter of time before someone of xxxy‘s musical calibre would take a crack at reworking a track.
It’s a more upbeat affair than we’re used to from either Ghostpoet or xxxy but it plays its Funky card well, avoiding the trap of becoming either too cheesy or too po-faced. Grab xxxy’s version below and then go out and buy the album.
Another producer I’m really getting excited about at the minute is xxxy. There seems to be two strands of the Garage-revival/Funky explosion of late: the tawdry bedroom producers re-hashing MJ Cole and the like; and the more experimental, darker producers like L-Vis 1990, Zed Bias, Lil Silva and of course XXXY.
Bubbling over with arpeggiated synths (a sound xxxy has come to make his signature recently), this new offering from XXXY is a cut above the rest and definitely a track to keep coming back to. It clearly takes its cues from dubstep though there does remain a degree of separation between the two.
