Whilst only a youngster, Melé has somehow managed to carve out an incredibly successful career as a producer. With storming releases on Mixpak and Grizzly already under his belt, he’s back with another EP for entitled ‘Starlight’.
Teki Latex and DJ Orgasmic’s online label Sound Pellegrino has announced the launch of a series of collaborative EPs. The first collaboration to take place will be Night Slugs co-owner Bok Bok and Swedish producer Tom Trago.
Well, Venezuelan-born beatmaker Cardopusher‘s been a busy little bee lately with not one but two EPs out soon. The first EP, ‘Instant Loving’, is already out on UK-based label Frijsfo and the second, an 80s-inspired Electro-romp entitled ‘Goldo State’ is scheduled for a mid-October release on Iberian Records.
Our latest contributor, Warsaw-born Venice Calypso, brings a new brand of UK Funky and Future Garage to the table. If there was ever such a thing as dark Tropical music then this mixtape encapsulates it; upbeat House and Funky is set against Deep House and rumbling Techno for a hazy, bass driven sonic assault.
Ghostpoet‘s been kicking a gargantuan storm this year, his debut album is a hell of a record and the debut single ‘Survive It’ threatened to render all other music pointless. Well, now he’s back with another track from the album, ‘Liiines’; a haunting ballad that avoids mawkish metaphors and clichés.
It’s a track that’s packed with heart-wrenching narratives and ingenious wordplay. It was only a matter of time before someone of xxxy‘s musical calibre would take a crack at reworking a track.
It’s a more upbeat affair than we’re used to from either Ghostpoet or xxxy but it plays its Funky card well, avoiding the trap of becoming either too cheesy or too po-faced. Grab xxxy’s version below and then go out and buy the album.
As one would expect from a professional drummer, Jonathan Meyer is all about the percussion. It’s should come as no surprise then that Meyer is a veteran in the Funky/Tropical arena.
He’s already played some big stages, sharing the bill with Tony Humphries and even Cirque du Soleil. Well, now he’s gone and produced a storming packet of tracks that should please anyone who heard his ‘Tribal Experience’ EPs with Frank ‘O Moiraghi.
So it’s about time he released another EP. ‘Many Things’ blends House, Tropical and Funky in rather a delightful way. There aren’t any tracks available for free yet, but you can stream the whole EP below, including Kerri Chandler’s stunning reworking of ‘Toms Over’.
You may remember Murlo’s remix of BD1982 a week or two ago, well now he’s back with a Funky/Bashment remix of Mr. Vegas’s ‘Certain Law’. The original is fast-paced Ragga and Dancehall MC’ing over a combination of ‘Barbwire’ riddim and Harry Toddler’s aptly titled ‘Bad Man Nuh Dress Like Girl’.
Completely removing the instrumental track, Murlo instead adds a distorted, grizzly version of Rebound X’s Grime classic ‘Rhythm & Gash’. If you don’t like bangers, then look elsewhere. Or, take joy in the implied punnery of all the different tracks involved in this production.
In anticipation of his new EP on Trouble & Bass, Samo Sound Boy has made Ikonika‘s remix available for free download. Last year’s ‘Taking It All’ EP kicked up a right fuss, with ‘Five’ in particular garnering a lot of attention from DJs, critics and fans the world over.
The new EP maintains the Tropical/Funky element but brings a more mature approach to the table. Ikonika’s remix is a much darker reimagining of the track, more at home on a Night Slugs or Hyperdub release.
Grab Ikonika’s remix of the title track below and then be sure to grab your copy of the full EP from all the usual digital shops.
On the back of some astounding releases on Numbers and Hyperdub, Ill Blu are back with a free track.
It’s not exactly alien territory for the London duo, but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, right? There’s rattling funky
drums, high-end basslines, airhorns and of course their trademark “Ill Blu” sample.
