It’s actually much better than it sounds. I haven’t heard the original yet but Paul Weller’s music seems to have almost no bearing at all on this track.
The track, ‘Starlite’, will not feature on Weller’s new album (as if you cared) but is destined for a limited edition 12″. It will be released digitally on August 7 followed by the 12″ on August 22.
To take on the task of remixing a revered bit of work like 2007′s ‘Shell Of Light’ is nothing short of ambitious – and brave for that matter. The reputation of Burial’s work precedes it; the cultural status of the record has rendered it archetypal Dubstep as well as a precursor for the “post-Dubstep” movement in equal measures.
To improve upon a track like this is no mean feat, but Shlohmo is actually pretty restrained in his approach. Slowing it down to almost half speed, he basically just spreads the sounds out, allowing them to breathe. The haunting vocals are subdued slightly, but the beautiful ethereal quality is left intact; a must for this track.
One name that’s been cropping up a lot lately is Dillon Francis; his unique mix of UK Funky, Moombahton and Dubstep has been making waves with the Mad Decent crew among others. His ‘Westside’ EP in particular attracted a lot of attention from, well, pretty much everybody.
According to his Soundcloud page they were going to get this released through a label but because they couldn’t get some of the samples cleared they decided to release it themselves for free. You can grab the whole thing below by clicking on the little arrow at the right.
I have to say, we’ve somewhat neglected the consistently lovely Tigerbeat6 lately but that was before I knew Kid606 was working on a new album and a new podcast series. There’s not much information about the album yet, but it’s the podcast we’re really excited about.
The first mix in the series is curated by Kid606 himself and consists exclusively of his own remixes of classic Tigerbeat6 artists. Future episodes of the series promise interviews, free DJ mixes, live sets, radio shows as well as unreleased tracks and bootlegs from Kid606 and the rest of the team.
You can stream the mix below, after the tracklist, and then download it if you want. Keep your peepers peeled for more news on the new album.

Two of the biggest names on Party Like Us, AC Slater and Udachi, have just finished work on their new EPs. Not only that, but the two releases coincide with the second anniversary of Party Like Us and the celebratory compilation album to mark the occasion.
Firstly, Udachi’s ‘Stumble’ record is a beautiful but bassy number, featuring a number of remixes from the likes of Kry Wolf, Flinch and The Living Graham Bond. Coming up in August we have AC Slater’s new single ‘Believe Me’, featuring Xaphoon Jones. A really heavy Dubstep number, it’s backed up by just one remix from Botnek on the B-side. You can stream the whole thing below.
But most importantly is the second anniversary compilation ’2 Years Of Bass’. The album contains few surprises, it’s largely an AC Slater greatest hits, though it does feature some unreleased remixes of Slater’s tunes as well as a HeavyFeet remix of 92 Eternal and some classic tracks from B.Rich, Flinch, Udachi and Ladybox.
Hot on the promotional trail of her new album ‘Frantically Hopeful’, Pursuit Grooves has put together a marvelous new mix for FACT magazine. The new album, out on Tectonic, is a beautifully abstract affair incorporating inventive cuts and loops with a soulful twist.
As one would expect, her FACT mix is an extension of her production style. She uses an SP-505 sampler and a collection of synths to “add additional layers of percussive effects, melodic chords, bass tones and philosophic words of wisdom”. It’s largely a live session, featuring heavily mutilated samples of 2562, SBTRKT, Cardopusher and Urban Tribe.
It’s truly fascinating stuff and completely engrosses you as a listener from start to finish. Download it below and then buy – not steal, BUY – the new album from the lovely Tectonic chaps.
Atom River boss Ital Tek has been busy lately, working on a new EP called ‘Whip It Up’. The four-track release is a dark, brooding production with crushing basslines dominating and glistening synths dancing in the back ground.
Although ‘Ulysses’ doesn’t feature on the EP, it does serve as a pretty accurate representative of what’s in store. You can grab it from Atom River via the usual suspects.
It’s been about a month or so since we heard news of Untold and vocalist Samuel Chase collaborating on a project simply titled Dreadnought. Well now, we’re able to preview the whole EP for your streaming pleasure.
Their debut release, ‘Caroline’, is clearly heavily influenced by Radiohead; soaring ethereal vocals glide effortlessly over a dark, heavy bassline with abrasive, almost industrial synths. You may recognise Samuel Chase’s vocals from Samuel & The Dragon. If you don’t, you might want to check that out too.
Listen to previews of the EP below, courtesy of FACT and then pre-order the EP here. Also, keep an eye out for their debut LP together, which I’m told is under construction.
The ‘Chambacu’ remix EP from Munich’s most unpronounceable production duo (an achievement in itself) has proved to be one of the most popular releases from Mad Decent this year. It’s been the topic of much discussion and has been played, mixed and remixed countless times and the buzz is only getting louder. You can listen to and download the Bert On Beats remix at the bottom.
And then there’s this: a selection of Dancehall and Hip-Hop edits they’ve been playing and remixing recently that’s sure to get any party in trouble with the neighbours.
