Listen to Jamie XX’s FACT mix

Jamie XX shouldn’t really need introducing. But just in case you’ve been living in space for the last few years, he rose to fame as the drummer in seminal post-Dubstep indie band The XX before remixing Gil-Scott Heron’s final album ‘I’m New Here’ to what could only be described as critical sycophancy.

Listen to a new track from Rx

Our good pal Rx has just sent us this new track ‘Bang Yer Head’. I’ve got to say, well. I’m not exactly sure what to say other than Burkat manages to perfect the Wall Of Sound-step. If you can imagine being punched in the face by a subwoofer, it would feel like that times a million.

KOTJ Radio | Episode 24: Rx

RxOnce again, we’re slightly late on this one but it’s worth the wait. Originally from Philadelphia but now living in Brooklyn, Rx has been consistently ahead of the game, putting EPs and singles such as the free ‘Bumble’ EP on Nightshifters and the ‘Kaleidoscope Island’ EP on Subdepth.

The ‘Bumble’ EP he released last year on Nightshifters was a free release that threatened to break the NS servers! 2000 hits in one day tells you this guy draws a serious crowd for a very good reason.

As bass music takes a darker turn, incorporating Techno and IDM, Rx rightly welcomes the change with open arms. It’s the type of music that makes your chest cavity rattle and your internal organs scramble.

This new mix bridges the gap between heavy bass and Techno with artists like Martyn and Mala attending to the Dubstep side of things while Rx himself offers up some Techier numbers. The 3/4 time stays more or less throughout, but with more arpeggiated synths, hip-hop leanings and even some IDM thrown in for good measure. That said, it’s still very much a club-oriented piece, always maintaining the pace to keep you dancing.

Besides collaborative EPs with Sonkin and Shiftee, there’s also a debut album on Made In Glitch featuring ‘Turquoise’ from this mix. Oh, and if you’re in NYC around the 3rd of the month, you really should check out the DUSK monthly parties he puts on at Pianos with another favourite of ours, Siyoung.

New Dillon Francis EP on Top Billin

Yet again I find myself blogging the living daylights out of Top Billin. This time it’s LA-based Dillon Francis with a return to his unique take on Dubstep.

You may be surprised to hear Dubstep on this record after his forray into Moombahton. Well, we’re told the Westside EP (originally released by Mad Decent) was actually scheduled to be released after the ‘Bossa Rocka’ but Mad Decent decided the two releases would clash so this EP got pushed back.

The title track is backed by the B-sides ‘Fiyah’ and ‘Money Slot’. Remixes come from Sharkslayer, MightyFools and Sir Nenis. You can grab your copy here.

You can stream the EP below and then buy your copy here.

Listen to a track from the new Synesthesia 12″ on Senseless

Senseless Records have embarked on an interesting venture: they’re releasing limited edition (250) vinyls featuring tracks from UK Grime producers Rossi B & Luca and Poland’s The Phantom and Venice Calypso. Each volume in the series will feature hand screen printed artwork from a different visual artist, with Song and Gloom already confirmed as contributing to the project.

The 12″ is the first part in five releases focusing on each of the senses, marrying the visual with the sonic, and was thought up to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the label. This first vinyl explores the sense of smell; with sight, touch and spidey to follow.

The series has already had extensive support from quite a range of artists, including Murderbot, Oneman, Kanji Kinetic, Ikonika, Optimum and dozens of others. You can download Venice Calypso’s ‘Drifting’ from the release below.
