I think the thing I love most about Chris Widman (who put together this mixtape for us back in May last year) and his Quadratic collaboration with Colin Harris is that it’s really quite difficult to describe what kind of music they actually make. Ostensibly, they push the sound of Chicago House and footwork. However, the sound of old-skool jungle and breaks is never far behind them.

While it may sound a bit of stretch, contrived even, to combine house and jungle, Quadratic make it seem so effortlessly natural that you’re left wondering why on earth other jungle doesn’t sound like that.

The whole EP is incredible, truly imaginative and memorable jungle and breaks abound, so it was quite the challenge to pick just one track to share with you. ‘Rave..’ has “classic” written all over it, replete with textbook samples; but it was ‘Latest Concerns’ that really stuck out for me with its climactic builds, perfect D&B vocals, junglist breaks and a meaty rave synth to keep you out your seat.

‘Between The Cracks’ will be released on 10th June through Droidsong.

To celebrate their tour they’re giving away HTRK‘s remix of the increasingly ubiquitous ‘Nono/Yoyo’, a crushing dirge (and I mean that in a good way) of industrial electronica that will give you arrhythmia if you’re not careful.

Standish/Carlyon‘s music is so relentlessly cool you would swear the duo were from Brooklyn or London. Self-assured, melancholic and arresting, the duo’s brand off downtempo electronica is a cut above the rest.

Check out their tour dates below. If you live in Brooklyn you’re in for a treat. If not, take a listen to HTRK’s remix of ‘Nono/Yoyo’ at the bottom, taken from the duo’s recent album ‘Deleted Scenes’ on Felte, and try to pretend you do live there.

Tour Dates:
Thu. May 30 – Brooklyn, NY @ Glasslands w/ The Field
Fri. May 31 – Brooklyn, NY @ Body Actualized w/ Golden Donna, Octo Octa, Profligate
Sat. June 1 – Brooklyn, NY @ Cameo Gallery w/ Tempers, Candide, Redaelli (DJ)
Sun. June 2 – Brooklyn, NY @ Secret Project Robot (Day Party) w/ Redaelli, Brad Truax (DJ)

You may remember some time back I got rather excited about an upcoming collaboration between TOKiMONSTA and the truly legendary Ultramagnetic MCs founder Kool Keith. Well the wait is finally over as TOKiMONSTA’s ‘Half Shadows’ LP has been released and we now have news we will be treated to an EP of remixes of the collaboration.

It’s become more and more standard for producers to blend half a dozen different styles and genres into just one track, so much so that the initial impact of TOKiMONSTA’s decision to mix half-step, tropical house, and electro (as well as the kind of abstract hip-hop that Dr. Octagon embodied) is somewhat dulled.

However, once you collect yourself and really pay attention you realise just how impressive this all is. Combining all of these elements is one thing, but to do it in such a way that everything has space to breathe and still sound natural is a truly inspiring thing.

‘The Force Remixes’ EP, which is out now on Ultra Records, features remixes from Star Slinger, A. Chal, Miguel Campbell, Nick Hook and Branchez. Take a listen to the original version of ‘The Force’ below before grabbing your copy of the EP.

It seems odd that Raffertie has yet to release his debut album. Having kept atop of the heavy bass, minimal house and dubstep scenes, you’d be forgiven for think Raffertie has been going for longer than he has.

While his newer music is a lot more restrained and downbeat than early tracks like ‘Do That’, his sense of whimsy and surrealism has never left him. As for his production, the love and care is still present and correct, as is his knack for crisp production. Essentially, the real change is one of maturity and this is no more evident than on the album’s first single ‘Build Me Up’.

I could wax lyrical with no end in sight about the different elements at play in ‘Build Me Up’ or the musical journey Raffertie’s career is taking. Or I could save you the boredom and direct you straight to this promo film made for the album by Vincent Haycock.

The new album ‘Sleep Of Reason’ will be released on 23rd July via Ninja Tune.

Following on from label heads L-Vis 1990 and Bok Bok, the elusive Girl Unit has now contributed the third mix in the Night Slugs mixtape series, blending a range of sounds from the likes of Ikonika, DJ Technics, Kingdom and Jam City. Aside from the usual new, classic and unreleased tracks that often comprise a mixtape, Girl Unit also snuck in an upcoming treat from a possible new release.

The new track, ‘Praise Dance’, does exactly what it says on the tin as it mixes gospel organ samples with an uplifting major chord sequence with the effect being a sort of modest euphoria. Though there has been no official announcement thus far, the track itself is of such quality it would be a criminal waste to keep it under wraps.

You can stream and download the Night Slugs mix below before repeatedly checking back at their website on the off chance of an update.

Full of laid back synth washes and full-bodied live drums, ‘Perfectly’ may not be quite what we’re used to, but you can hardly criticise him for that.

Not quite the “cloud rap” he’s known for, ‘Perfectly’ has been described as “emo” and even compared to Jimmy Eat World. However you see it, ‘Perfectly’ is a gentle and warm exploration of the lighter side of Hemsworth’s sonic lexicon.

His new EP, ‘Still Awake’, is set to be released via his own website on 23rd May. Take a listen to ‘Perfectly’ below.

These last couple of weeks have seen quite a few examples of this and Arc Rev One‘s new track ‘Transference’ seems set to further that trend.

The compilation has been designed to celebrate the Circadian Tales radio show on Global Funk Radio 9-11pm Tuesdays (GMT). According to the radio show’s mission statement the compilation is “a very cool and progressive compilation album … containing cutting-edge electronic music”.

With that in mind, take a listen to Arc Rev One’s ‘Transference’ below before grabbing your copy of the compilation when it comes out on Sleepy Bass Recordings.

Cuttooth is essentially a hip-hop producer, but in the loosest possible terms. His beats do stick more or less to hip-hop constraints, yet there’s so much besides that; folk, IDM, soul, funk and shoegaze all get a look in. But it’s his work with vocalists that really shines through. Besides his work with Hitomi, Cuttooth has long been collaborating with Bridie Jackson (another well-known face in the North East music scene), most notably on ‘Cold Moon‘.

Over 39 minutes Cuttooth’s mix glides gracefully through established classics from Lapalux, Shlohmo, Flying Lotus and Björk to name but a few. What we have here is essentially a best of for the last 12 months and beyond. While a lot of these choices may seem downbeat at first, once you dig a little deeper and really listen a sense of optimism shines through.

His debut album ‘Elements’ was released in 2011 on Psychonavigation, a humble little label who can count Roedelius, The Orb, Gel-Sol, The Future Sound Of London, Mixmaster Morris and Richard H Kirk among its many supporters. ‘Elements’, if you’re lucky enough to find a copy, was an impressive debut that aimed to twist and contort the listener’s perception of time with subtle tricks and acoustic slight-of-hand.

Looking forward, you can expect an album coming out this year on 4Lux White and an EP coming out on Plynt. While there isn’t a huge deal of information to go off just yet, you can bet your bottom dollar they’ll both be really rather special.
