As DFRNT, Alex Cowles treated us to a lot of modest, downtempo house and techno that kicked big bass wobbles to the curb. Well, in the spirit of the unexpected, Cowles is launching a new side-project as AGC Esquire in which he explores “overly cheesy 80s retro synth and drum stuff”.
This new project and its fruits wouldn’t sound out-of-place on the soundtrack to ‘Drive’. In fact, I’m beginning to suspect the idea for the film may have been stolen from him.
This will not be the end of DFRNT, however, or even a hiatus for the alias as “there’s a big album release on the way this year. AGC Esquire is just a little something else. It’s almost more indulgent in a way.”
