The second most-retired man in Hip-Hop after Jay-Z, Mike Skinner has teamed up with Grime’s latest Head Boy, Ghostpoet. The two MCs are collaborating as part of Rizlab‘s series of experimental recordings between artists that both contrast with and complement one another.
I should of course add that it’s not simply Mike Skinner joining Ghostpoet, or even The Streets; he’ll be joined by his latest collaborator Rob Harvey as The D.O.T. The resultant track is ‘Trouble’ and it sees Mike Skinner take a step back from lyrics, instead focusing on the production, allowing Ghostpoet and Rob Harvey to handle the chorus and verses.
It used to be a crushing disappointment whenever big business got involved in music, but in recent years it’s actually proved to be a tremendous boon for the industry as this involvement actually just spells greater financial support for the artists, rather than a creative hindrance. Rizlab, along with Bacardi and Scion, have lent invaluable support to underground electronic music for the past few years funding and nurturing exciting projects that may not be able to get off the ground otherwise.
“It’s a great opportunity to work on something really innovative and exciting. Mike, Rob and I have been playing around with some great ideas for a track and a video – but this is the chance to make it a reality.”
