Spotlight: Untold

As one half of the Hemlock management (alongside Andy Spencer), Jack “Untold” Dunning has been cultivating a wealth of talent in the UK for the last three years. Ever since his debut release ‘Yukon’ in 2008, he’s churned out a phenomenal volume of impressive work including ‘Yukon’ and the hugely memorable collaboration with downtempo electronica combo LV ‘Beacon’. His signature sound is difficult to pin down – sometimes thudding and danceable as with ‘Just For You’ and ‘Messiah’, sometimes deep and brooding as with his debut ‘Kingdom’ or ‘I Can’t Stop This Feeling’ – which bodes well for the listener.

Having met the chap I can personally testify to the fact that Dunning is not only a thoroughly nice chap, but also a passionate music buff. And that shows in the way he structures his music, uncompromisingly forward-thinking whilst mindful of what has gone before with the utmost appreciation. His music, whilst sounding new, takes its cues from Industrial, old Grime, IDM, Dubstep and House – all beautifully crafted into something wholly original.

When asked of his approach to productions, he speaks eloquently and directly. This is a man who has his production technique down. That’s not to say he won’t step beyond his comfort zone; his recent collaboration with Samuel Chase – as one half of Dreadnought – was a heavy, pounding Industrial session that sounded like nothing that either artist had made before.

As for what lies ahead, who can say? A collaboration with Thom Yorke? An album of U2 covers? A House project? A series of white noise tracks? It literally is that hard to predict Dunning’s career trajectory. He could do anything, and you better believe he’s going to do it well.
