Chicago is a tricky place to sum up. It’s the city that invented electronic dance music culture, plain and simple; the place where the idea of staying up all night in a warehouse to dance to synths and drum machines first took shape. If it weren’t for Chicago, none of us would be doing what we are doing today. It’s that history, and Chicago’s continuing role at the forefront of electronic dance music culture, that made me move here four years ago.
This new track from Canadian-born producer (now based in Berlin) Hrdvsion is markedly different from a lot of electronica out there, not simply in his approach to producing, but also in his execution. Although it’s a pretty traditional Techno tune – pitch-shifted of vocals, thumping bassline – the weird synth lines and melodies that dance over them are pretty unique.
The press release for this album informs us that this is “the first album that almost drove us crazy.” It also happens to be the first Modeselektor recorded and produced entirely by themselves, all within one session over the course of ten weeks. The team have always been known for their balance of club tracks and experimentation, but never has it seemed so unified and synchronized.

Blawan has announced he will be pursuing a new sound on his next record ‘Peaches’. The new record, to be released on Dutch label Clone, promises a more Techno-oriented sound and to be something of a shift from what we’ve come to know and love from young master Blawan.
DJ Lil’ Tal has been a mainstay in Chicago for some time, exploring Chicago House, Booty Bass, Ghetto House and Techno. More recently, he’s made moves into Juke and Footwork, as this latest production on Chrissy Murderbot’s Loose Squares proves.
Presumably inspired by the Only Fools & Horses character of the same name, Shortstuff has decided to drop the moniker he made a name for himself with, and has returned to the Mickey Pearce alias of olde.
Rather than simply reiterate what so many people have said about the sad loss of such a genuinely inspirational person, I thought it only fitting to celebrate his jaw-dropping career. Alongside Busy P, DJ Mehdi was the driving force behind Ed Banger.
If you were one of those finely tuned folks who practically went primal for Onra‘s ‘Chinoiseries’, you’ll be beside yourself to learn that he’s back with a new 7″ single. Yes, they still make those.
